SAMBAR is an improvising sax duo of Paulina Owczarek and Tomek Gadecki (a rare combination of two baritone saxophones). The band, formed in 2012 during the Art of Improvisation Festival in Wrocław, is dedicated to free improvisation and exploring the wide variety of baritone sounds and textures. They have performed in Poland and Europe, taking part in festivals such as Krakow Jazz Autumn, Unsound, Mirror Mirror and Musica Privata. Their first album Melt! was released in 2014 by NotTwo Records. SAMBAR collaborated with Sly & The Family Drone and created an audio-visual project Clenched around the mouth (with percussionist Javier Carmona and filmmaker Joanna Rosiak) inspired by the poetry of Jan Brzękowski.
"The synergy between these two baritone saxophonists is as solid as their sonic vocabularies are inclusive. (...) The pair can switch moods and methods on the proverbial dime and their post-tonal interplay is as intriguing as the multiphonics that render ensemble size irrelevant.Perhaps we might look to SAMBAR for baritone's future and it’s difficult to imagine it in more capable hands"
